Beijing is constantly changing. There is a massive effort underway to improve, clean, energize, stabilize, etc the city before the 2008 Olympics. [What you didn’t know that the 2008 Olympics are going to be held in Beijing?] The subway now has a third line with more under construction, but Beijingers continue to buy cars and drive them despite all sorts of taxes and fees on cars [although gas is still subsidized to some extent]. The city is remarkably polluted. I have developed a “cold” here from the thick air. Visibility is always poor. My friend Andy claims to have seen a clear sky three times this summer. I think his recollection might be optimistic. Athletes cannot handle this, certainly not the poor marathoners….
Between internet issues and this malady, the blog will be out of commission for a spell.
