Why is foreign language instruction in the US poor? Extrapolating from my own case, I would say because it started late (9th grade) and did not emphasize how this might really be useful in one’s day-to-day life. [n.b. ‘Reality-based’ learning is useful for foreign language if not calculus.]
However, things seem to be improving. International schools, 1.3 billion dollars for Chinese language and culture classes….
